Chapter Fourteen

JONAH hadn’t really expected to see Linc in the office on Monday, but he still felt a little disappointed when he didn’t come in. After Caylee’s pep talk, he’d started to wonder if he really was dismissing what could be genuine interest on Linc’s part. Not that it would hurt any less if Caylee was wrong.

The phone rang just before he was about to leave for class. “Courtwright Ranching and Energy. How can I help you?”

“We’re still on for Wednesday night, aren’t we?” Just Linc’s voice was enough to send a shiver up Jonah’s nerves.

“I’ll tell my instructor tonight that I’ll have to miss class,” Jonah answered. “What time should I be ready?”

“It runs from seven to ten or so, though we don’t have to stay the whole time, just make an appearance. Maybe we can go out for dinner afterward, since they never serve more than cocktails and finger food at these things.”

“I’d like that,” Jonah said. See? Linc doesn’t just want to be with you only when Melissa’s around, Caylee’s voice whispered to him. “What time do you want me to be ready?”

“I can pick you up around six, but you’ll have to give me your address.”

At six on a Wednesday evening, Wes might be working, but Aidan and Sammy would both be home. The idea of having to face them while Linc picked him up like a prom date was more than a little scary. “You can just come meet me at the office. I can get ready here, and that way I won’t have to leave early to drive home and get dressed.”

“You know, it’s all right if you leave work early, Jonah,” Linc said with a hint of a chuckle. “Hell, take the whole day off if you want.”

“I don’t need a whole day to get ready!” Jonah protested. “Besides, Ford promised to send me the information on the additional breeder cows you’re selling by the end of the day tomorrow, and I’ll have to get the records updated.” And if I don’t have something to keep me busy all day, I’ll go crazy from nervousness.

“Have it your way. Six o’clock at the office.” Maybe it was his imagination, but he thought Linc’s voice sounded deeper. “I’m looking forward to it.”

“I—I am too.” It was at least partly the truth.
